GOLAM FARUQUE BEBUL
Mohammad Golam Faruque, also known as Bebul, was a renowned artist born in Jamalpur in 1958. He completed his Bachelor of Fine Arts degree in printmaking from the Bangladesh College of Arts and Crafts, now Faculty of Fine Arts, University of Dhaka, before pursuing his masters from the Central Academy of Fine Arts, Beijing, in 1985. Bebul's abstract expressionist style gained traction amongst critics and art lovers due to his sustained practice, which left a significant trail of innovative application of colour and form. His dedication to abstraction earned him several accolades, including the Bengal Foundation Award in the eighteenth National Art Exhibition organized by the Bangladesh Shilpakala Academy in 2009. He served as the Principal of the College of Arts and Crafts in Rajshahi from 1986 to 1994 and was the founding chair of the Department of Fine Arts at the University of Rajshahi from 1995 to 1998. Mohammad Golam Faruque passed away in 2020, leaving behind a legacy which can now be experienced through a body of art bearing his signature style. His contribution to the art education in Bangladesh is also earnestly acknowledged by his peers.
