JAMAL AHMED

Jamal Ahmed was born in Dhaka in 1955. His artistic journey began in 1978 after the completion of his Bachelor of Fine Arts degree from the Institute of Fine Arts, now Faculty of Fine Arts, University of Dhaka. He went on to pursue a postgraduate degree from the Academy of Fine Arts in Warsaw, Poland, and carried out a two-year research course between 1980 and 1982. In 1982, he went to Japan and studied oil painting at the University of Tsukuba, where he earned a post-graduate degree. Ahmed's artistry earned him recognition as a visiting teacher and artist in residence in the Art and Design Department at North Carolina State University in 1995. His realistic paintings of pigeons, horses, boats, gypsies, flood victims, fishermen, marine life, and the troubadours of Bangladesh have captured the hearts of many. Over the years, Jamal Ahmed's creativity has earned him numerous accolades, including the Grand Prize at the 11th National Art Exhibition at the Bangladesh Shilpakala Academy in 1994, the Grand Prize at the 14th National Art Exhibition at the Bangladesh Shilpakala Academy in 2000, the 2nd Best Prize at Artist’s Association Exhibition in 2000, an Honorable Mention Award at the 10th Asian Art Biennale at the Bangladesh Shilpakala Academy in 2001. He currently serves as a professor at the Department of Drawing and Painting at the Faculty of Fine Art, University of Dhaka. Since 2019, Ahmed has been the president of Bangladesh Charushilpi Sangsad. He received the prestigious Ekushey Padak, the second highest civilian award in Bangladesh, in 2020.
