TAJUDDIN AHMED

Tajuddin Ahmed’s practice is characterized by an expressive painterly language that reflects the emotional and social realities of contemporary life. Working primarily in painting, he employs richly textured surfaces, layered compositions, and subdued yet resonant colour palettes to explore themes of memory, displacement, and the resilience of the human spirit. His works transform everyday experiences into contemplative visual narratives, balancing abstraction and representation with a deeply personal sensibility.

Emerging as an artist during the transformative years following Bangladesh’s independence in the 1970s, Tajuddin Ahmed studied Drawing and Painting at the Institute of Fine Arts (now the Faculty of Fine Arts), University of Dhaka. His artistic development was shaped by the evolving modern art movement in Bangladesh, and he has since continued his practice while living and working in Toronto, Canada. Throughout his career, he has remained committed to a visual language that reflects both his cultural roots and his experiences across different geographies.

Ahmed has held numerous solo exhibitions in Bangladesh and internationally, including at Tivoli Art Gallery, Alliance Française de Dhaka, the Dutch Club in Dhaka, Gallery 23 in Haarlem, the Netherlands, and Adzak International Arts Space in Paris. He has also participated in more than fifty group exhibitions, including Painters Contemporains du Bangladesh in Paris and the Contemporary Painting Exhibition in Islamabad. In 2016, he presented a major solo exhibition at Edge Gallery, Dhaka.

His works are held in public and private collections in Bangladesh and abroad.

Through a career spanning several decades, Tajuddin Ahmed has established himself as a significant voice in contemporary Bangladeshi painting, recognized for his evocative visual language and enduring artistic practice.
