TULSI RANI DAS
Tulsi Rani Das’s practice explores the visual and cultural possibilities of textiles through colour, ornament, texture, and drapery. Working primarily with acrylic and mixed media, including fabric applied directly onto canvas, she transforms the decorative qualities of textiles into semi-realistic and conceptually driven compositions. Her works draw from Bangladesh’s cultural and traditional heritage while reflecting on the psychological and social experiences of contemporary life, moving between positive and difficult aspects of collective and individual experience. Tulsi explores the intersection of ornament, cultural memory, and contemporary experience, establishing her as an emerging voice in Bangladesh’s contemporary art scene.
Born in Sylhet in 1997, Tulsi Rani Das completed her Bachelor of Fine Arts in Drawing and Painting from the Faculty of Fine Art, University of Dhaka, in 2020, followed by her Master of Fine Arts in 2022. Her practice encompasses diverse approaches to drawing and painting, with a particular interest in contemporary art and experimental materiality. She also worked as a Trainee Conservator on the S. M. Sultan Project at Bengal Foundation, gaining experience in the preservation and study of artistic heritage.
Das has exhibited widely in Bangladesh and abroad. Her first solo exhibition, ABORNNE, was held at Zainul Gallery, Dhaka. She has since participated in numerous group exhibitions at venues including Abinta Gallery of Fine Arts, Alliance Francaise de Dhaka, Zainul Gallery, and Edge Gallery. Her notable exhibitions include 9+ONE: Interdimensional Journeys Part II, Lobongolotika: Cartographies of the Feminine, and Bridging Horizons.
