VINITA KARIM

Vinita Karim’s practice is shaped by a nomadic experience of place, memory, and cultural exchange, transforming cities and landscapes into dreamlike visual environments. Working across painting, sculpture, and installation, she draws from the diverse geographies she has encountered – from the forts of Malta and the Sahara’s dunes to Dhaka’s urban landscape and the Mediterranean Sea. Her abstract cityscapes merge vibrant colour, imagined architecture, and fluid forms, transforming personal memories of places such as Tripoli, Bern, Nuremberg, Manila, Stockholm, and Cairo into poetic spaces that exist between reality and imagination.

Born on September 4, 1962, in Myanmar, Vinita Karim has lived and studied across several countries, experiences that have profoundly informed her multicultural artistic perspective. She earned a Diploma in Fine Arts from the Gerlesborg Art Institute, Stockholm, in 1981, followed by a Bachelor of Science in Economics and Business Administration from the University of Stockholm in 1985. She later completed a Master of Fine Arts at the University of the Philippines in 2007, where her thesis, Artmasala: Multicultural Negotiations Outside Boundaries, explored the complexities of cultural identity and exchange. She currently lives and works between Dhaka and Delhi.

Karim has held 28 solo exhibitions internationally and has participated in numerous group exhibitions across different countries. Her practice encompasses painting, sculpture, and installation, reflecting her sustained engagement with movement, migration, memory, and multicultural experience.

Her works are held in private and institutional collections internationally. Through her continually evolving visual language, Vinita Karim transforms the places she encounters into imagined worlds, carrying fragments of multiple cultures and geographies into a singular, deeply personal artistic universe.
